Alameda Schools Go Green Google Group
Started independent of CASA - Anyone interested in helping Alameda Schools Go Green, please join this Yahoo Group.
The Alameda Schools Go Green Google Group (launched in October, 2008) is designed to serve as a conduit for green-related sharing-- information, advocacy, inspiration.
Hopefully, by learning about environmentally-friendly programs that are already up and running in the district we can better serve our own school sites as well as the district as a whole. If you're interested, please join the group and feel free to post resources, questions, concerns, challenges and victories. Please feel free to invite those in the community who you think would be interested in helping AUSD go greener. More more info, contact Chantal Currid Chantal@alamedanet.net
I joined this group as a way to find out what various schools were doing. Here is what I got:
Edison is planning an "Earth Week", April 20 - 24th (with Wednesday - Earth
Day and Friday - Arbor Day). Here are some of the activities we have planned:
- Making a Junk Mail Mural similar to what is shown in this picture: http://www.ibabuzz.com/education/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/cool-the-...
- each kid brings in a piece of junk mail to contribute. We will
combine it with informational emails and some literature at school onhow to reduce junk mail.
- Taking pictures of all the kids with waste free lunches (we will tell them which day we are coming in and encourage as many kids as
possible to bring one in). 5th graders have offered to do waste free lunch presentations/education in the lower grades a few days before.
Pictures will be displayed on the Go Green board.
- Having a walk and roll to school day, and a bike helmet check afterschool.
- An evening family event where kids bring in recyclables (cardboardboxes etc) and we construct, build, create recycled structures or art.
In addition I got responses from phone calls to the following schools:
Otis: They are doing a tree planting project
Earhart: They do a trash free lunch as well, Pat Schmitz, who I spoke to said it is a good way to get the older students involved in teaching the young ones about how do avoid plastic or reuse it.
What do people think about having a city wide tree planting event? Schools could participate but also any other organization that wanted to. The Transition model says to accomplish something that anyone in the community can see, and trees would seem like a
good way to do that.
Maeanwhile I am continueing to contact schools, but haven't gotten much of a response as yet, maybe there are no plans at most of them.
ATTN Outreach and Education Committee, RE: EARTH DAY- The City of Alameda Public Works Dept. will "Sponsor" CASA's booth at Earth Day, Washington Park, 10-4pm. We get the 10'x10' booth at no charge. I also mentioned some of the other CASA ideas for the day ie: the choir, speakers, etc. at a planning meeting and they were generally well-received. Please contact me at 510-748-3913 if you have information on what CASA plans to do that day so I can pass it on the the event organizers at ARPD. Thanks, Bill Garvine
ATTN: Outreach and Education Committee RE: EARTH DAY- CORRECTION ON EVENT TIMES...I just noticed that the Earth Day flyer has the hours of 10 AM to 3 PM for the event.

Post it on your refrigerator (Energy Star rated, right?) or that cork bulletion board (sustainable materials!) and check off items as you complete them and make changes in your household. Second page has tons of great resources to help you.
