WASTE AND RECYCLING

Page history last edited by david burton 9 mos ago

The Waste and Recycling sub-group is focused on sustainability issues related to the four "r's" - reduce, reuse, recycle, and rot.

We will be forming an email list for communication, and anyone will be welcome to join.

Watch this space for a link to get involved. (If you would like to help with this initiative click here)

Initial Efforts

  • Establish a Freecycle Cafe: Form an online listing/community where Alamedans can communicate to barter or exchange goods.
  • Establish an online listing of Alameda specific Recycling and Reuse opportunities: Provide information on where, in Alameda, to recycle materials, where to find recyclable products, etc.
  • Add Alameda Freecycle to Stopewaste.org listings: Expand the visibility of Alameda Freecycle by listing in the Stopwaste county guide and on their website.  To learn more about Alameda Freecycle go here
  • Stop Junkmail: Make Alamedans aware of services that help reduce junkmail and encourage participation.  Where possible establish partnership(s) with CASA and these organizations.  SUCCESS STORY: To get started now, check out the links listed below .
  • Food Scrap Recycling: Develop and implement an outreach program to educate Alameda residents on the benefits of this program and how to do it effectively.
  • Recycling in Schools: Develop and implement recycling programs in Alameda schools.

Uploaded to the Pages & Files section (under "All Files") are three documents: the Alameda County Recycling Guide and two excerpts from the guide related to Freecycle and Junk Mail. The Recycling Guide document is pretty big (7 MB), so we might want to delete it and just include the website link http://www.stopwaste.org/home/index.asp?page=355. I uploaded the excerpts to provide a status report on a couple of my assignments from the October 30th meeting. Freecycle is prominently featured in the Recycling Guide. The link takes you to freecycle.org where folks can find the Alameda Freecycle group. Freecycle is also listed in the on-line version of the recycling guide (Recycling Wizard) as well as other areas of the site (including the School recycling section) The Recycling Guide also includes steps for reducing junk mail and organizations to contact for getting off of junk mail lists. -- Ruth Abbe

Thanks Ruth! On this page I added links to Alameda Freecycle (see the Alameda Freecycle initiative above and in the "Related Links"), the junk mail guide (see the Stop Junkmail initiative above), and a link to the Recycling Guide (see the "Related Links" section at the bottom of the page). I wouldn't worry about the file sizes; we have plenty of space on the site for the time being. - David Burton
