Alameda Schools Go Green

Google Group

by Joyce Mercado

Sometimes simple ideas can be the most powerful.  Chantal Currid, a parent at Edison Elementary School, thought wouldn’t it make a lot more sense for people from different schools across the district to share ideas and projects for greening their schools, rather than have everyone acting independently and reinventing the wheel?  So she took the bull by the horns and set up the “Alameda Schools Go Green Google Group”, and word spread through PTAs at each school.

The  Alameda Schools Go Green Google Group (launched in October, 2008) is designed to  serve as a conduit for green-related sharing-- information, advocacy, inspiration.   Hopefully, by learning about environmentally-friendly programs that are already up and running in the district we can better serve our own school sites as well as the

district as a whole.  If you're interested, please join the group and feel free to post resources, questions, concerns, challenges and victories.

Great ideas are being shared!  Alameda County Industries (ACI) did a wonderful presentation at one school and now others have requested the presentation.  Edison School used a grant to pay for a set of reuseable plates, cups and silverware for each classroom to use for class parties (and a bin to store each set), which will eliminate thousands of paper plates, cups and plastic silverware of waste over the upcoming years and saves money in the long run.  Schools also collected worn out athletic shoes for ACI's recycling program.

CASA

Did you know that you can find CASA on the internet?  We have established a “wiki” where you can find information about CASA’s current initiatives, keep current on events with our calendar, find resources to help you “green” your own life, and add your own content.  Check out: www.casa-alameda@pbwiki.com

What is a “wiki”?  A wiki is a web site that allows users to add or revise content using their web browser.  The term comes from the Hawaiian phrase “wiki wiki” which means “superfast” - meaning that if a lot of users add content to a site in a short time it can grow very quickly.

We have established this site as a quick, no cost way to have a web presence where CASA members can communicate with each other, share information, and keep current on happenings with the group.

On the site you will find lists of initiatives in the areas of Energy, Transportation, Waste/Recycling, Food and Water, and Outreach.  We encourage all of you to check out these lists to find an area where you can get involved.

One of the best features of the wiki is that YOU can take part in creating content!  Once you join the wiki you can add to our lists of resources, tell us about  the books that have influenced you, comment on initiatives, or recruit others for a new initiative.

Get started today!  Visit the wiki, become a member, and start helping us build CASA!
